Definition - What does Ergonomic Evaluation mean?

An ergonomic evaluation is the process of performing a scientific investigation of an individual’s work station and environment in order to provide recommendations for a healthier work environment based on the results of these findings. The purpose of an ergonomic evaluation is to minimize or prevent injury to the individual and to promote workplace efficiency through the application of ergonomics.

An ergonomic evaluation can be conducted as routine best practice to safeguard the health of employees or it may be required where an employee has incurred an injury and requires specialized support and pain management. The evaluation takes a holistic view of the physical capabilities of the individual, the physical demands of the job, the equipment used to perform the job, and the workplace environment. In should include things such as evaluating motions required, time the body spends in specific positions, the physical characteristics of the employee, and environmental factors such as temperature, lighting, and noise levels.

Through the evaluation process, risks are identified, the magnitude of the risks are calculated, and the required action to mitigate the risks is put forward. An ergonomic evaluation can help reduce the rate of injuries, increase individual productivity, and improve employee comfort.
